People Recognise That Coaching Does Change Lives

People Recognise That Coaching Does Change Lives

It is the number one realisation of a person who has undergone coach training and become knowledgeable in results focused coaching models, techniques and systems that coaching really does change lives.  This person is the coach who would have learned sufficient skills with depth to assist a client/coachee accomplish their looked-for objective.

The key to success in terms of the huge breadth of coaching on a personal level i.e. life coaching is that in the first instance the personal desire of the person wanting to be coached has to be present, not the case of someone else wanting another person to be coaches, perhaps a husband wanting the wife coached, no, each person has free will and it is that characteristic that allows coaching to happen. Without that initial ‘want’ coming from the individual, coaching would be too painful and totally unproductive and disappointing. The limiting factor has to be sourced out and removed from the mindset so that success happens and an action plan put into place so that success can be maintained.  Waiting until all conditions are perfect is not the ideal state of affairs; the best time is right now.  Claiming success is all about who you are and what you want and why you want it.

Another integral significant element needed from the prospective coachee is the willingness to be honest, but also authentic and open to the coaching process as it progresses without allowing complacency or negativity to creep in.  The set point of the emotion has to become bigger than the current comfort zone position.  Compliance in this behaviour leads to a positive framework to work from and enhance upon as coachee and coach move towards the goal.  Honesty with self is part of the energy and motivation of a life coaching session.

Now to make the fulfillment of the desire become a reality, those elements of following one’s own instincts, passion, hunger even urgency have to be present to allow and make the change happen plus finding the time to get the actions done.  You know, it amazes me each time that in reality anyone can find the time to get things done when they really want to.  With those components in place the coaching process can happen by external quality questioning that leads to internal re-alignment and manifestation on the outside.  Poise and elegance are the overriding principles of high-quality coaching.  The coach trainer will convey this crucial dynamic as part of the life coach training program.  I know this for a fact as I have learned this and pass it on to my students participating in courses and private coaching clients, one step at a time.

To have a new and exciting impact on your life, consider coaching it might be the ideal solution for you, it’s really up to you do make the decision to change your attitude and implement new habits so you get a different outcome. You can do that with new strategies, tools and resources from a place of knowledge.  Learn to seize your power, by taking massive focused and consistent action.

Now is the best time to get coached.  I’d be delighted to share my expertise with you.

Do You Have a Business Plan?

Having completed your life coaching course and received your diploma it’s time to drum up some business.

The best way to do that is to put together a plan of action, however the know-how and motivation to take action can sometimes remain a mere wish.

There is a proven formula to keep yourself motivated and knowing where you are going with your Life Coaching business, is to create a Business Plan.

Have you got a business plan?  If not, you are seriously missing out on a great tool that will give you the advantage and guaranteed success to achieve both a happy lifestyle and financial success.

A well structured business plan gives you the edge to focus on your ideas, with enthusiasm and energy.

Here’s my tip for creating success: The Six Step Coaching Model.

The principle of smart questioning forms the workings of the model with; Why, What, Who, When, Where = How.

WHY – ask yourself why you want to be in business for yourself.  Go on be honest.  Is it just to get extra money?  Or, are you serious about creating a sustainable future for you and your family.

Only you can answer your WHY.  Go ahead give it a go.

WHAT – ask yourself what you want to achieve by becoming a life coaching  business owner and more importantly what you’ll give in return for having the privilege of working on your own terms from home.  Believe me it’s a privilege to work from home with no boss, no 9 – 5 having to be out of the home or staying late at work, no compute and no stress.

WHO – so, who’s involved in your home based business and how does your working for yourself impact on other family members and your social life?  You’d also be wise to consider who your hero/heroine is in the arena of personal development and delve a little deeper into how they got started and become a success.

WHEN – now is the time, now is the best time, now is when you get things done. OK, so you may have a future time in mind after certain things have fallen into place, but you know what, now is the only time to move forward with being in business.

WHERE – it’s all in your head, your thoughts, your ideas, it’s all about you.

Yes, that’s right it’s all about you.  It’s vital that you are honest with yourself when deploying The Six Step Coaching Model as part of your strategy.  After all as I’ve said before it’s all about you, your choices, your finances, your health you’re your lifestyle.

When you know t he answers to the five W questions above you’ll have the ‘HOW to’ knowledge to write an action packed business plan that is clear, focused and realistic with the gumption to follow through.

I’m moving forward, how about you?  tell me more about your goals and ambitions as a professional life coach and let’s celebrate your success together.

IIC Member Benefits – A Fresh Perspective

I’m John Standaloft, a business coach based in Edinburgh.  My mission as a business coach is to work with the owners of SMEs with 3-100 employees and my strapline is “Transform your results and maximise your potential”.  I’m delighted to have recently been appointed as the IIC’s Head of Membership, responsible for the provision of services to the existing membership.

In a modest way I see the IIC as my client, and it is undoubtedly one with a lot of potential to be realised.  My vision is of a dynamic organisation with members having lots of opportunities to interact with each other as well as with the IIC officers.  The IIC is already a prominent international coaching community and the leading independent accreditation for coaches and coach training.  It would be great for the IIC to develop the reputation as THE organisation for coaches to join for professional development and credibility in the coaching world.

I plan to be pro-active in getting to understand what services members want from the IIC.  There are a wide range of services already on offer and developing and publicising them is an important part of my role as well as looking at completely new offerings.

One of the key benefits of IIC membership is the global reach across over 70 countries.  Being a member has the potential to have a global cultural experience which is continually evolving.  Think of the modern Olympic Games which started in 1896 with a relatively small number of countries entering.  It is now the greatest sporting event on the planet, the one that all top athletes aspire to compete and win at – along with their coaches!

In the coming months I will be seeking your views through a survey and would be delighted to receive ideas directly at: john-standaloft@the-iic.org

Through the monthly newsletter I will be highlighting specific benefits of membership and how to take advantage of them.  I look forward to being of service to the membership.

How To Achieve Your Best Year Yet

Work Smart, Work Less, Achieve More

Achieving your life’s goals and dreams is often times on the mind of many of us.  Soon 2011 will be here and wouldn’t it be great to have the solution to know how to  actually achieve those  goals and stop struggling, to enjoy a debt free lifestyle, eliminate fear, remove all doubts, live with confidence, live in optimum health, to be able to celebrate passion and the ability to achieve and share more.

I’m sure those thoughts are on the minds of many people.

Goal attainment is possible and thankfully I’m lucky enough to know the real secret of how to achieve more, think bigger, give back more and live a life of bliss.

Science proves itself with formulas.  Personal development coaching uses models to attain results.  I’ve managed to put the two together to obtain a desired outcome.

This is how I do it.  First off I need to have a dream.  I dream regularly and continually update my wish list.  Dreaming is not always about sleeping and going through the process of experiencing night time visions, its’ also the practice of visualisation and meditation at the next level, all forms of ‘day dreaming’ while awake and self hypnosis.  Great athletes like Michael Jordan, musicians like Mozart and Leonardo de Vinchi, all utilised these formula to imagine what they desired.

Following on from the dream stage I write what I see in my head.  I explore with words what I think I want.  Backwards and forwards I go until I’m happy with what I’ve written. This exercise is the foundation for my wish list.

Next I take those original inner images coupled with what I’ve written and source real pictures, photos and paintings of what I can see in my minds’ eye.  With these pictures I hang them around my home as reminders of what I want to have in my life.  I include images of my family, friends and those other great personalities with whom I want to mix.  Just seeing these ‘Aide-Mémoire’  thrill me on to making my life just amazing.

Having seen what I want, written it down and revised my thoughts around what I’m thinking, I’ve begun to build a Picture Library of my dreams – others might refer to this action as a vision board.

All of this action feeds my feelings, using this formula I am continually fed positive images in my brain that chemically mix with my feelings to create powerful emotion of joy, forward looking and energy to make it all come true.

Then I have to plan and plot my route to success.  I do that by writing down a strategic plan, a blue print, just like great architects do.  This acitivity allows me to harness my daily actions in order to have my dreams come true.  The plan is a real masterpiece, it has all the moves, step by step actions, decisions, outcomes I need to know to continually move forward and have results.  Success does not elude me.  I make sure I’m on top of my game by knowing what I need to do on a consistent basis to achieve self mastery and what I deem as success.

There you have it, a formula that feeds the spirit and gives results.

Take It On. Do It and Play The Game

Begin Now

When you believe you can do something then you can.  I know this for a fact.  My own coaches have coached me towards my desired goals and I in turn have coached thousands towards making their dreams come true. The reason behind why we can do whatever our heart and soul desires is simple, especially when you know how is all about the movement of your thoughts within your brain, its Coaching Kinetics.   It’s because we choose to take on the role of becoming our own leader and allow ourselves to be creative and have more.

Personal development as many of us are familiar with is all about the individuals self-development using specific programmes, tools and models to gain the competitive edge over their competitors, but more importantly raising their bar of confidence and ability while having fun.  Self growth is actually an opportunity to re-structure your mind-set and excel at taking your life to the next level, whoever you are, at any stage of your life.

It doesn’t surprise me at all that so many people have success at achieving their goals and creating time freedom and more wealth when they step up and decide to make changes in their life. I’ve always found other people’s success inspiring, motivating me to tap into my own leadership qualities and follow their example by creating a map for myself.

Life does throw up glitches every now and again in the form of health, relationships, career and finances when the synchronicity appears to slow down, but you can take back responsibility for self growth.  Take that mythical bull by the horns and begin to do the steps.

You can begin by taking the decision to live by a new set of rules for success in your life and your business. So go ahead and make decisions to be successful then back it up by taking the action necessary for the results you expect.

Coach Yourself To Success

During the early days when you start to move up your personal ladder of success remember that you don’t need to risk everything as you play the game to win, it’s not a competition.  It’s all about the spirit of playing the game because you have nothing to lose because you can make the game whatever you want it to be.  You are completely in charge with total authority.  Remember as a matter of course it’s always up to you.   Your leadership will show up as you roll towards the top.  Just play the game and by putting the effort in you will succeed, there is no time like the present to begin and no need to look around for excuses not to play to win.

Good luck with your choice of personal leadership – write to me and let me know how you are getting on with your goal achievements, by the way, your story might appear in my next book ‘Cosmic Soul Coaching A-Z’.

What Exactly is Mental Strength?

What Exactly is Mental Strength?

Lately I’ve been questioned “just what mental strength is anyway” and what is the main difference between mental strength and mental toughness?

The fact is…it depends.

Mental strength is definitely an intriguing notion and a person needs an alternative point of view to comprehend. Mental strength can often mean lots of things to many individuals, based precisely on what the context and content of the circumstance is.

To a mountaineer mental strength indicates persevering to the peak when you feel you’re too fatigued.

To Lance Armstrong it’s a tad different, to him “The important thing is to do the physical work on the road and live a life that is congruent with his purpose of winning the Tour de France.

To a mother it could be remaining relaxed when getting the children ready for school.

Let’s have a closer look at the terms toughens and strength. Based on Dictionary.com here are some definitions.

Tough/Toughness:

  • Hard to bear
  • Endure
  • Difficult to perform, accomplish, or deal with
  • Hardened

Strength:

  • The quality or state of being strong
  • Mental power
  • Force
  • Vigor
  • The capability to exert power

Pause for a second and feel what these explanations do to you, just what are the emotions and thoughts that come to you.

Doesn’t one of then seem much more daunting and the other more empowering?

If you’re like me, I get a feeling that toughness is a lot more like “putting up with” and strength is much more self-empowering.

Additionally, I would present that the important part of the definition for ‘strength’ is the word ‘power’. To increase our knowledge of what strength is we’ll now have to define the term ‘power’.

Once again, according to dictionary.com ‘power’ is ‘the ability to cause things to happen’. We are able to now define strength as ‘the capability to cause things to happen’.

For strength to reveal itself there’s always must be resistance and this resistance must be overcome. The important thing here is that the resistance needs to be overcome. With toughness, the resistance doesn’t necessarily need to be conquered, just endured.

A weightlifter cannot utilize his/her strength without lifting some resistance, i.e. weights; the swimmer isn’t able apply his/her speed without a time, or somebody, to defeat…there needs to be resistance to get stronger.

This appears to be major problem theses days, individuals are not only NOT searching for resistance in their life, and they are in fact avoiding it! How can any person expect to get ‘stronger’ in their life if they never experience resistance?

Unfortunately, each time an individual does meet with resistance in life, by default they use ‘toughens’. Chances are they don’t grow stronger and will experience pain again the next time they meet resistance.  Then after awhile they become insensitive.

Consider a callus. It developed but the skin getting tough to the resistance. Soon you simply can’t feel that area anymore, and even worse, the callus actually starts to hurt.

Becoming tough ultimately results in more pain!

Becoming strong leads to power!

Therefore, we are able to declare that mental strength is the ability to overcome mental resistance and consciously cause things to happen. The ‘things’ are worthy objectives and goals.  These are consciously decide upon and often based around your core values.

Mental strength is:

  • Being relaxed, centered as well as focused on Your ultimate goal in the middle of turmoil
  • Being strong enough to acknowledge your are incorrect, but only if you are
  • Having a large enough vision to move through “the dip”
  • Is realizing that you “teach” individuals wither you teach them or not (by your action) and then act appropriately
  • And most of all, mental strength is developing a life worth dying for

This last item might seem dark and if you look Bushido (The Way of The Samurai) this is actually the basis of their philosophy. If you’re living your life’s purpose, you take action today…for tomorrow you may not be here. This is creating a life worthy of dying for.

In my experience, mental strength is much more empowering then mental toughness, all though many individuals may well use the terms interchangeably. I would like to ask about a powerful request and deliberately concentrate on becoming mentally strong. And whenever you meet some type of mental resistance which life tosses your way, simply say to yourself, “Excellent, bring it on…it’s time to train!”

Should you choose this you’ll encounter incredible shifts in your life!

Coaching Tip - Be Transparent

Introduction

The client’s situation is probably different from the coach’s experience. It
is important that we avoid mixing the two.

The Coaching Tip

One of the advantages of bringing life experience to coaching is that many
of us have been in situations similar to those that our clients bring to the
coaching session. We have survived, even conquered, and are pleased to be
able to help others do the same. However, any similarities between a
client’s situation and the coach’s past experience can at the same time be a
disadvantage. It is very easy to allow our perception of our own experiences
to overlay our perception of the client’s situation. We may notice the
similarities and overlook the differences.

The importance of LISTENING to the client without ANY preconceived notions
about them or their situation can never be stressed too much. So as to
become aware of what is really happening, and what resources the client has,
or can develop, it is vital that the coach become TRANSPARENT. In other
words, the window through which the client’s situation is observed must in
no way be colored by the coach’s own past experiences.

Does this mean that as coaches we cannot use what we have learned? No.

What it means is that FIRST we must become transparent so as to see, hear and
feel the client’s situation, know the client’s resources (including those
that are not yet known to the client), and comprehend the client’s fears and
desires. THEN, and only then, should we turn back to our own experiences and
learning, so as to draw from them what will best assist the client.
If we start to draw on our own experiences too early, those experiences may
color and distort the window through which we observe the client’s
situation. If that happens, we will not see it objectively, but
subjectively, so that we may believe there are similarities to our own
history that are not in fact there or that are not relevant. The coach may
then propose strategies that have worked in the past, but that are not now
appropriate.

First, become clear of your own history so as to learn the client’s
situation. THEN, if possible or necessary, apply your experience to aid the
client. As much as possible, do not mix the two processes.

How to Maintain a Professional and Private Appearance on Social Networking

Do you have profiles on Facebook or Linkedin? Do you use any of these profiles to promote and network your coaching practice or business?

If so, you should be aware of the levels of privacy and how to maintain your privacy  within these networks. You should also know how to maintain a professional profile, and a profile for your personal life.

Facebook is a very diverse site. It is also very easy to upload a large deal of personal and business information, then unwillingly have it shared with anyone who may stumble across your profile. This may be helpful if say, you are interested in hiking, and post some hiking pictures to let people know of your hobby. Not so helpful, would be having your place of employment, business or personal phone numbers and other contact information displayed for all to see. Personal data-mining sites, identity thieves, and malevolent hackers are just some of the few ways your personal information can be retrieved from social networking sites and used without your permission, if found. The very open and easily accessible nature of Facebook lends itself to these risks. This is why it is a good idea to keep what you display on Facebook selective, and not business specific.

First, know and keep track of what you post. Posting about hobbies, interests, friends, and other things you wouldn’t mind telling a stranger are fine to post openly. You can also use Facebook to network with friends and simply share simple stories, ideas, or simply say hello to people. But like most people, Facebook is quickly becoming the go-to means of communication and data sharing.

If you are using Facebook to talk with friends about more specific activities, plans, etc. follow the steps below to make sure your friends are the only ones seeing the information. Remember, if you were leaving your house for vacation, you wouldn’t leave a sign on your front door saying “Hey, I’m definitely going to be gone for the week. Billy, the key to the door is under the mat so you can feed my fish.” You would most likely talk to your friend Billy in person and ask him to feed your fish and give him the key yourself.

Steps to Privatising your Profile on Facebook

1. After logging in, navigate to the top-right corner of your browser window and look for the drop-down menu labeled “Account”. After clicking on the drop-down menu, you will see a list of options. Click on “Privacy Settings”.

2. Once in the Privacy Settings window, you will see a list of privacy options. The first section to set-up is “Basic Directory Information”. To help real world friends find you, some basic information is open to everyone. Facebook also suggests setting basics like hometown and interests to everyone so that friends can use those to connect with you. This is a good idea, only if you haven’t already connected with your desired friends. Click on “View settings” next to the “Basic Directory Information” description.

3. Within the “Basic Directory Information” settings page, you can select the following pieces of information to be public or private. The icons with the locks next to them let you control who sees the information listed to the right of them. “Everyone” means that anyone that has an account with Facebook can see that area of information, wether or not they are friends with you. This is the default setting for all of your information. If you have not gone to this page before, then you have been sharing all of your information with anyone that has searched for your name on Facebook. Refer to the screenshot below to set these settings for the best privacy without losing too many networking possibilities.

4. To set some areas to “Only Me”, click on the customize option from the drop-down menu, then select “Only Me”.

5. Now that you have secured your basic information, you can now set privacy settings for the rest of your profile information. Click the “Back to Privacy” Button at the top of the list. You will now see the “Sharing on Facebook” area. You can see a list to the right of what information is shared with whom.

6. For optimal security, your privacy listing should look like this:

7. In order to set specific settings as above, click on the customize button on the left-hand side. If you would like slightly different settings, or want more privacy, you can always select different values just as with the “Basic Directory Information” settings.

So now that you have set some privacy features for your Facebook Profile, you will be more protected from unwanted visitors, or anyone who collects or searches for personal information for malicious use. Remember, Facebook should be used for friendship and sharing of things you would normally share with a casual friend. If you want to post information of a more professional level, then continue reading to learn about the privacy features of a Linkedin profile.

In order to maintain a professional appearance within social networking, and post basic business-related information, use your Linkedin profile. Linkedin in is a fantastic way to network with colleagues about professional business-related discussion. Linkedin would not be the place to discuss your trip to the Grand Canyon. Posting a basic resume, work history, or company facts are all simple examples of ways to use Linkedin professionally. Simply use common sense. What you would talk to your boss about, or your employees, wouldn’t be posted on Facebook. Just as what you do in your personal life probably isn’t shared with your boss, or shared with an interviewer or interviewee.

Setting privacy settings within Linkedin is a very simple process, and it is always getting easier. Follow the steps below to set your privacy settings:

1. Log in to Linkedin. You will now see your “Home” screen. Click on the “Profile” tab at the top bar of the Linkedin screen.
2. You will now see your profile details. Click on the “Edit Public Profile Settings” Tab at the top of the page.
3. You will now see a list of what information is listed for public view. For optimal security, especially if you have detailed professional or business information, click “None off”

You have now made it so that only people you specifically connect with can see your professional information. This will allow you to choose exactly who can see your business or professional information by making a “Connection” with them. Just as you wouldn’t blatantly tell a stranger where you work or your business history, you don’t want that information openly shared on the internet.

Once again, it all comes down to common sense. Always think of social networking sites as telephone polls in a city center, or a cork board in a local cafe. What you post on them, will always be seen by someone.
